What is the forest products
industry?
- The forest products industry is
composed of two segments: primary and secondary.
- The primary segment consists of
foresting, logging, sawmills, pulp & paper mills, OSB, and
plywood mills.
- The secondary segment consists
of architectural woodworking, cabinetry, residential and
business furniture, and store fixtures.

Vital Stats
- Forest products is Alabama's
largest industry by number of companies, number of employees,
and amount of wages paid. There are forest products companies in
all 67 of Alabama's counties.
- There are 7,246 forest products
companies in the state with a sales volume of over $28 billion.
- 124,529 people are directly
employed by the forest products industry. It is
estimated that 10% of Alabama's workforce supports the forest
products industry directly or indirectly.
- Alabama ranks 2nd in the nation
in the amount of privately-owned forest land.
- Out of FDM Magazine's list of
the top 300 forest products companies by sales, 16 conduct
operations in Alabama. Of these 16, half have their
operations entirely in Alabama, accounting for $729 million in
sales.
